Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
Cardiology deals with heart problems that are congenital, that is to say problems that the person was born with, as well as heart problems acquired due to bad eating and lack of exercise.
The most common cardiac procedures that are offered in Mexicali are:
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Coronary artery bypass grafting is a type of cardiac surgery used to treat severe coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease is the blocking of coronary arteries due to the build up of a substance called plaque, typically as a result of a poor diet and lack of exercise. The blockage eventually leads to chest pain or discomfort called heart angina. In some cases, it can lead to the formation of a blood clot and can cause a heart attack. The surgery involves the use of a healthy artery or vein to connect both sides of the blocked coronary artery, therefore bypassing it and restoring the natural flow of blood.
TMR: Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization
Transmyocardial laser revascularization, also known as TMR, is a type of cardiac surgery used to treat angina. It is typically used after other options have been tried and exhausted, for example, when a patient has had coronary artery bypass grafting and complications prevent the surgeon from performing another one. It involves the use of a laser aimed at very specific target areas of the heart. The laser creates small channels in the heart chamber, allowing fresh blood to flow.
Heart Valve Repair
When flaps or leaflets of a heart valve are not working properly, blood cannot flow normally into and out of the heart. Health valve repair is used to fix the valves that don’t open or close properly, typically by removing or rearranging cardiac tissue. Sometimes a valve cannot be fixed and it has to be replaced, either with a natural valve from a donor or an animal, or with an artificial valve.
